The 5 Rules of Video Chatting

So, you’ve exchanged numerous messages back and forth with your online love interest and now you’ve decided to graduate to live video chatting. However, before you turn on that webcam, you should know that there is a fine art to chatting on camera. With that said, it’s not hard to master. By following these 5 essential rules, you’ll go from webcam novice to pro in no time.

1. Avoid looking like a showgirl or a hobo-

When it comes to making a first impression, it’s undeniable that your appearance matters – especially on camera. Don’t get nervous, though; all this means is that you should dress for your video chat like you would if you were going on a real, live date.

Video chat programs like Skype have the tendency to wash people out. Ladies, this means you’ll want to wear whatever makeup you’d usually wear on a date, plus maybe a little extra. I’m not suggesting you bust out the two-inch sparkly fake eyelashes (after all, this is a video chat, not an audition for Showgirls 2); however, subtle details don’t really show up on camera, so it’s OK to go a bit bold. You’ll want to make sure that your face has color and your eyes and lips are well defined (even if it’s just a matter of brushing on your favourite lip gloss.) Instead of going for basic black, wear a top in a fun, vibrant color that will really pop on camera.

Men – since makeup is probably out of the question, I will say this: Just because this is a video date and you listed in your profile that you’re “laid back,” it doesn’t give you permission to look like you just rolled out of bed. Make sure you’re well-groomed, freshly shaved (if applicable) and that you’re wearing a nice, clean shirt. Lastly, before your video chat, make sure that you check the webcam on your computer and assess the lighting. Good lighting makes a huge difference, so try different locations in your house until you find a lighting situation that’s the most flattering.

2. Do a background check – literally.

When it comes to choosing the right location in your home for your video chat, make sure you select one with a neutral background that’s devoid of clutter. I’d bet good money that your online object of affection isn’t too keen to seeing your leftover lunch, dirty dishes, extensive collection of pizza boxes and beer bottles, or (gasp) an up close and personal view of your bathroom. I don’t care how good you think the lighting is when you’re sitting on your toilet – just. don’t. go. there.

Instead, think neutral. Look for locations in your house where there isn’t a lot going on in the background.  For example, seat yourself near a wall that’s painted in a neutral color. If you do decide to feature a view of your home in the background, make sure the area is clean and free of debris. Remember, you want the focus to be on you and your gorgeous face, not your laundry hamper that’s vomiting clothes onto the floor of your room.

3. Position the camera properly –

I know this seems like common sense, but you’d be surprised at how easy it is to go out of frame on a webcam. Make sure you know where to look when on camera so that your video date actually sees your face. Your online love interest is really excited to chat with you. Don’t make them have a conversation with your moving chin, top of your head or elbow.

4. Make eye-contact –

Just like a real date, you’ll want to make eye-contact with the person you’re chatting with. There’s nothing more off putting than someone whose eyes wander distractedly while you’re trying to have a conversation with them.  And whatever you do, don’t check your phone! Remember, THEY CAN SEE YOU. Not sure where to position your eyes so that you can connect with your video chat partner? Every webcam is different, so if you’re not used to video chatting, it never hurts to do a dry run with a friend before the big day.

5. Make sure your tech game is on point –

If you’re using a webcam that you bought on a street corner in 1998, you’re doing it wrong. There’s no point in video chatting with someone if all they’re going to see is a grainy, fuzzy (read: creepy) image of you. It’s also not much fun to have your chat be interrupted by frequent technological issues. If you’re going to master video chatting, you need to have a computer and webcam that’s modern and works well. In other words, get thee to a Best Buy. You’ll thank me later.
