Why Online Dating is the Best Option for a Millennial

Millennials, are you feeling all maxed out when it comes to online dating? It’s OK – we’ve all been there. Everyone reaches a point in their online dating career when they’re like, “I literally just can’t.” Sometimes it can feel like you’ll never meet anyone, ever. But, before you burrow into a pile of blankets and a Netflix K-hole of your own making, hear me out: now is not the time to give up. In fact, as a single twenty-something, online dating is still your best option.

Here’s why –

1. Online dating fits with your lifestyle.

Think about it – are you really going to spend your precious free time hanging out at singles bars in hope that you might meet someone who is not only hot, but also has a bunch of stuff in common with you? I’m going to guess “no.” As a millennial, you have a lot of stuff going on – an active social life, a career you’re building, the latest season of Orange is The New Black. Lucky for you, you’ve become very efficient and tech savvy when it comes to organizing your life. You’re already running your life from your smartphone, so it just makes sense to add online dating into the mix. While there’s nothing wrong with meeting people “the old fashioned way;” until that happens, there’s no harm in checking out a few matches on your phone while you’re waiting for your Starbucks order.

2. Your twenties are for dating and meeting new people.

As a twenty-something, you’re at a point in your life when you basically have a free pass to date whoever you want and as much as possible with very little judgement. Whether it’s dating that hot, tattooed bartender that plays in a band or getting to know the bespeckled, Zooey Deschanel-esque girl that you probably wouldn’t have met otherwise, now is the time to experiment and have new experiences. Luckily, online dating makes it incredibly easy to meet and interact with people outside of your normal social circle – so, embrace it. Swipe right. Experiment. Meet new people. Make mistakes. Live to tell some great stories. Repeat.

3. Everyone is online.

While I’m never one for following the crowd for the sake of following the crowd (for example, doing something just because everyone else is doing it); when it comes to online dating, it’s actually good advice. Sure, there’s always the chance that you’ll meet someone offline (don’t close yourself off to the possibility) but, the majority of people in your age are online. So, go where the people are. If you’re hoping to meet a diverse collection of individuals who are also looking to meet people, your best bet is online.

4. Online dating gives your life balance.

While you’re probably really focused on school and/or building your career, it’s important that you give your life some balance. This means making time not only to socialize, but also to date. If you’re hoping to meet someone you could have a long term relationship with (I’m hesitant to say “the one” – but you know what I’m talking about) you need to get out there and date. Although we’ve all been in a place where we’d rather sit at home in our pajamas, making a point to date is good for you. Not only does meeting new people get us out of the house (and into real pants), it also pushes us out of our usual comfort zone – and as the inspirational poster says, “life begins at the end of your comfort zone.”

5. You will learn what you do and don’t want in a partner.

Online dating is perfect for this. Meeting lots of new people online is a great way to hone in on exactly what you do and don’t want out of dating.

The more people you date, the better you’ll get to know yourself. After all, this is what being in your twenties is all about. Meeting as many people as possible, making mistakes and discovering what you really want in the process. When the right person does come into the picture, it will be that much easier to recognize them.
