Transferring (Porting) an Existing Number

Transferring your current fax number to an online provider (sometimes called "porting") can be a bit of a hassle. You'll need to fill out a Letter of Authorization (LOA) and send over your most recent phone bill. In order to make life easier on their customers, some providers have created instructions to follow that help make the process much simpler. Others only provide information if you request it over the phone. Below, you'll see what kind of assistance the different online fax companies provide. We also provide tips on how to get this task done.

Aside from the convenience factor, different providers also charge different amounts for the porting service. For example, RingCentral and Nextiva provide the service for free, whereas eFax and MyFax charge a fee.

Porting charge: Free

  • Instructions to port your phone number are displayed in the signup process, in the support section of the website and in the user interface.
  • When complete, you'll see that the number has been transferred in your user interface.
