Why Mobile Dating Will Rule 2015

shutterstock_78700432A year ago, I attended a conference where Markus Frind, the brainchild behind the mega popular online dating site, Plenty of Fish, was the keynote speaker. When Frind took the stage, he confirmed what many of us already suspected: the future of online dating is mobile. Why? Because mobile dating is awesome. Let me explain –

From ordering a pair of shoes, depositing a check to sharing your favorite videos – you can basically run your life with a few taps on a touch screen. With the plethora of tablets that are now available and the popularity of large sized phones like the Samsung Galaxy and the new iPhone 6, the market is rich with devices designed with the online mobile experience in mind. In other words, the world is becoming increasingly mobile, so it makes sense that online dating is, too. Because of this, I think we’re definitely going to be seeing more mobile dating in 2015 and I couldn’t be happier!

If you’re like me and plan on having an active social life in 2015, mobile dating apps are a great way to get you out from behind your computer screen and start meeting people! Apps from the likes of Zoosk and eHarmony allow you to connect with other local singles while on the go. Most of my work days are spent tethered to my laptop, so I like to spend my leisure time doing other things I enjoy: catching up with friends, going to the gym and enjoying the occasional Netflix marathon (sans laptop in sight.) Mobile dating totally rocks because it allows you to connect with other singles while you’re enjoying a drink with friends, on the treadmill at the gym or while standing in line at Target – wherever your life takes you. You can even flirt with your online love interest while binge watching Homeland.

Additionally, most mobile apps rely heavily on location based technology, which means that you’re able to access singles who are actually in your area and online, allowing you to connect with them instantly. After all, maybe the right person is at the bar next door and wants to come meet you and your friends for drinks…right now!

Not sure where to start? Here’s a few of the coolest mobile app features to look for in 2015 –

  1. Zoosk Carousel

Want to flirt on the go and have fun in the process? Zoosk’s Carousel feature is perfect for singles who want to add a playful spin to their online dating experience. Carousel allows you to look through photos of other singles and “swipe” left or right if you like them or not. If you find each other mutually attractive, you have the option to connect with them instantly using Zoosk’s in-house, free chat service. This is means that you can chat, flirt, interact and gage chemistry with a potential date without ever giving out your phone number. Using Carousel feels a bit like you’re at a fun cocktail party, however you’re in total control and get to decide which potential suitors you find “hot or not.” Trust me – it’s a lot of fun and the perfect for those times when you have a few moments to kill while you’re waiting to meet up with friends…or another date.

  1. eHarmony’s gorgeous design

I’m a huge fan of eHarmony’s interface: it’s ultra modern, well designed and the profile pages are gorgeous. In fact, much of eHarmony feels like you’re browsing through a stylish infographic, rather than an online dating site. So, I was delighted to discover that the same design features carry over into the eHarmony mobile app. Their mobile app is also really well-designed and intuitive to use. Communicating with your matches is easy and the various options (such as sending a “smile”, a message or “digging deeper”) are all clearly laid out with cute, stylish icons that are impossible to miss. Unlike other online dating apps I’ve tried, eHarmony makes it incredibly easy for you to do everything you’d do at home safely and comfortably from your smartphone.

  1. Match.com’s “Stream” and “Mixer” tabs –

The Stream is an endless stream of people that may be interesting to you. Singles are pulled based on location, your preferences, things you’ve liked before, etc. The experience is highly visual and feels more like you’re scrolling through your Instagram feed than an online dating site. It’s browsing at it’s best. You can see what’s out there, without any pressure to take any action (it’s also a fun time waster for when you’re on public transit, in line at Starbucks or waiting to meet up with other people!)

On the other hand, with Mixer, you swipe right if you like someone and swipe left if you don’t. You also have the option to like their photos or message them from within the Mixer tab. If you’re the kind of person who loves the one-touch accessibility of popular social media like Instagram or Pinterest, you’ll love this app because it provides a fun and highly visual alternative to traditional online dating.

At the end of the day, mobile dating apps open up a world of new, fun, convenient possibilities. With these mobile apps as your personal wingman, 2015 is sure to be your best year of dating yet!
